Course Calendar 2017

Are you looking for something interesting to do this winter?

Something to get you out of the house? Something that doesn’t cost very much and gives you an opportunity to meet new people … maybe reconnect with old friends? Learn a new skill like how to play an instrument, take photographs or hook a rug? Then Community School might be for you!

Community Schools run all over the Island in the Fall and Winter months … there are even a few that run all year long.

This isn’t school like most people remember though … while Community School is definitely a place you can go to learn a new skill (like how to play the banjo) it is also designed to be a social activity. There are no tests, no reports and no grades … just community volunteers mentoring other community members.

Classes typically run weekly for ten weeks at a cost of between $10-$20 for the entire session. This covers all administrative fees and a light lunch.  On the tenth week each school has a closing ceremony where students can display their work, enjoy each other’s company and share a meal together.

We think that’s a pretty good deal for $20 🙂

Each school is run by a committee – like the teachers, these people all volunteer their time. Each year in the Fall and the Spring the teachers and committee members of all the schools are given the opportunity to gather together at a workshop organized and run by the Association.

This is where we try our best to show our appreciation to these tireless volunteers … this is also where Community School volunteers from across the Island can come together and share their experience with each other and give us their feedback on what’s working and what’s not.

We are ALWAYS looking for new teachers and committee members to join us in delivering this exciting program across the Island.

If you have a skill you would like to share or if you just want to get involved with one of the best community teams on the Island then we want to hear from you!

There are some classes that are in such high demand we don’t have enough teachers … if you think, even a little bit, that you might be able to help us teach any of the following classes then we strongly encourage you to give us a ring or send us an email:

Classes that need teachers:

  • Basic Computers
  • How to use Microsoft Word / Microsoft Office
  • Yoga
  • Facebook / social media

I look forward to hearing from you!
